The date of manufacture of a bicycle's components can often be used to determine the date of manufacture of the bike itself. Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made.

From on, several different coding systems were used, from which the manufacture date and often the assembly date can be decifered. For pre Schwinns try taking out the crankset to check for a date code. We are in the process of collecting pre serial numbers in the hopes of rebuilding the date code system for this period. Pre B Z Schwinn's built-in kickstand was introduced in The DX style frames have a lower top-tube for lack of a better name that curves ever so slightly, however the chainstays on the Schwinn D97XE-OS run roughly parallel to the ground while the chainstays on the D97XE-6 and the D droop slightly as they travel from the rear dropouts to the bottom bracket. The -OS frame style seems to have been completely replaced by the more curvaceous -6 style by I have not found any examples of the DX frame style after although the 24 inch wheel size equivalent, the J series, was around at least until.
The company was founded in by Bob Haro. Haro started out producing numberplates for BMX bikes in his Home. Demand for these stylish plates quickly outgrew his one-man capacity. Don't know your TCR from your Defy. We Propel you into the extensive Advanced, even range from the Taiwanese Giant which is the world's largest bike manufacturer. Someone at Giant had some foresight when they founded the company in When that relationship ended inGiant moved in the direction of making bikes with its own badge on the head tube. As well creating roadmountain, hybrid and e-bikesGiant also manufactures its own components and equipment — ranging from helmets and shoes to wheels and GPS computers. Japanese bicycles are often of very fine quality, but few are available in the U. There are still many very fine Japanese bicycles available on the used market, and this article is intended as a guide to them. After the Second World War, Japan was primarily known for making cheap knockoffs of foreign designs, competing on the basis of cheap labor. This began to turn around in the camera and electronics industries in the s, but Japanese companies didn't figure out how to make and sell bicycles for the U.
The Chicago Schwinns were among the most bomb-resistant bikes ever built, and they were built with unique technology. The head tubes look as if they were fillet brazedbut they weren't. The head tube and the tapered segments that lead into the the top tube and down tube were actually made from two special forgings that were "electro-forged" welded together down the centerline, then ground smooth, so the seam is not usually visible. There are necked-down parts that fit into the top tube and down tube, like internal lugs. Muller has a very detailed explanation of this process, in his superb article:.

Bicycles are wonderfully simple, eloquent and efficient machines. A few of the bikes were purchased by me, or for me, new, including the brown Schwinn SuperSport, the Trekthe Univega FS, and the Trek for one of my sons. The rest have been acquired used, primarily at garage sales. Bike technology, of course, changes, but nowhere near as fast as computer technology. Many older bikes are still quite useable and still satisfy the casual recreational user. Indeed, many well-made used bikes are much better than some department store bikes today. The bikes here are grouped here into six, somewhat arbitrary, categories: Road - lightweight bikes for traveling on streets.
